Purpose

To evaluate the subjective satisfaction of patients after implantation of Vivinex Gemetric and Vivinex Gemetric Plus trifocal IOLs (HOYA Surgical Optics).

Setting

Multicenter clinical trial, randomized, prospective

Methods

A standardized questionnaire was used in 124 patients at the 6 month follow-up visit to evaluate visual disturbances, as well as spectacle independence and visual satisfaction for distance, intermediate and near vision. Data analysis was split into three groups: Vivinex Gemetric both eyes (G-G), Vivinex Gemetric Plus both eyes (GP-GP) and combination of Vivinex Gemetric and Vivinex Gemetric Plus (G-GP). Cylinder powers up to 3.00D were included. First eye’s in the G-GP group were implanted with Gemetric. No test of distance or near dominance was mandated.

Results

In the groups G-G (n=36), G-GP (n=36) and GP-GP (n=52) severe glare was described by 2.8%, 0%, 3.8% of patients, severe halos by 13.9%, 16.2%, 7.7% and severe starburst by 8.3%, 10.8%, 3.8%, with no significant difference between the groups. Satisfaction with vision at far was stated by 97.2%, 94.4%, 94.2%, at intermediate by 97.2%, 100%, 98.1% and at near 97.2%, 100%, 100%. The proportion of patients who never wear spectacles in G-G, G-GP and GP-GP groups are 91.7%, 94.4% and 98% for far, 94.4%, 97.2% and 98% for intermediate, 80.6%, 91.7% and 84.6% for near, respectively.

Conclusions

All groups; G-G, G-GP and GP-GP reported high patient satisfaction and high spectacle independence, and a low incidence of visual disturbances.
