Image Quality Versus Decentration In Aspheric Iols Regarding The Spatial Frequency

Purpose

The extent of spherical aberration correction of an IOL correlates with its decentration sensitivity. The aim of this investigation on an optical bench is to split the decentration sensitivity according to different spatial frequencies. Furthermore, the influence of the spherical aberration of the cornea on the decentration sensitivity of aberration-correcting IOLs is investigated.

Methods

The image quality for 25 lp/mm, 50 lp/mm and 100 lp/mm is determined on an optical bench for three IOLs with the best centering and up to a decentering of 0.5 mm. The lenses tested are the aberration-neutral 409 MP (Zeiss), the Primus HD (OphthalmoPro) with an aberration correction of -0.18 µm and the ZBC00 (J&J) with an aberration correction of -0.27 µm. Green light and two different corneas with a spherical aberration of +0.13 µm or +0.28 µm are used for the examinations.

Results

The decentration sensitivity of the IOL is positively correlated with the amount of spherical aberration correction of the IOL and the amount of spherical aberration correction of the cornea. The high spatial frequencies are affected first.

Conclusions

The preoperative adjustment of the spherical aberration correction to the respective cornea is particularly important for the high resolving power and for the perception of fine contrasts.
