Purpose

To study the effect of the wearing of soft contact lens (SCL) on the result of corneal ectasia in the Belin/Ambrósio enhanced ectasia display (BAD) of Pentacam corneal topography.

Setting

OCULUS Pentacam

Methods

Fifty right eyes of 50 myopic patients who wore SCL long-term were selected as the group A. Fifty right eyes of 50 myopic patients without wearing of SCL were selected as the group B. Pentacam corneal topography was used to analyze the anterior surface elevation values at the thinnest point of cornea , the maximum anterior surface elevation values in the central five millimeters diameter  , and the Df, Db, Dp, Dt, Da and Do values in the BAD system, which were compared between group A and group B. Patients in group A used themselves as controls to analyze the height morphology of the anterior corneal surface at the primary examination and at 1 month after SCL was stopped, and compared the changes of the above values in the BAD system.

Results

Compared with the group B , the ACE thinnest, the Df values and the Do values  in group A were higher than those of group B (P<0.05).  The ACE thinnest ,the ACE max, the Df values and the Do values were all decreased when the patients stopped wearing SCL for one month (P<0.05).

Conclusions

A long-term wearing of SCL can elevate the anterior corneal surface elevation values, the Df and Do values in BAD system. Stopping wearing SCL for one month affects less on anterior corneal surface and BAD system.
