Purpose
The objective is to present the habits of French ophthalmic surgeons regarding the intraocular lens (IOL) used in cataract surgery and the choice they would make if it were their own surgery.
Setting
The questionnaire was elaborated under the aegis of SAFIR (French Society for Refractive Surgery), and was submitted from march to April 2022.
Methods
The Google Form-generated questionnaire was on SAFIR website; the invitation to participate including the link to this questionnaire was sent to French surgeons by e-mail. The participants answered to 35 questions, among which 8 aimed at defining the professionals’ profile; indeed, those ones specified the age, the gender, the type of activity, the mode of practice and the number of interventions carried out per year. Part of the questionnaire was dedicated to what the surgeons would choose if it were their own surgery. All results were analyzed on Excel and statistics via Xlstat.
Results
The survey was fulfilled by 155 surgeons. Surgeons report using mostly hydrophobic implants (71%), with no preference for the color of the implants. The two main criteria for choosing the implant were refractive predictability (42%) and the preloaded nature of the IOL (15%). The main obstacles to the use of toric IOLs were the uncertainty of the refractive result (68%) and the additional cost for the patient (43%).
Regarding the choice that surgeons would make if they had to choose for themselves, 44% of respondents would choose an EDOF-type IOL, hydrophobic for 82% and tinted yellow for 59%. 92% of respondents place the quality of vision as the main selection criterion above independence from glasses.
Conclusions
The evolution of surgeons' practices can be described, based on previous surveys: 30% declared never to implant a multifocal IOL in 2015, compared to 18% in 2015. Regarding toric IOLs, 18% never implanted any in 2015, compared to 5% in 2022.
The study of the current habits of ophthalmologists regarding the choice of implants informs us about the current state of practices in France and the motivations underlying them. The choice regarding one's own intervention is correlated with the refractive state, the number of surgical interventions carried out and the emphasis placed on the quality of vision and the independence of corrective lenses.
