To evaluate the repeatability of corneal epithelial thickness (CET) measurements in normal eyes and recurrent corneal erosion (RCE) eyes using the epithelial map of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Retrospectively, patients with 3 OCT scans at a single visit between October 2021 and December 2022 were reviewed. Two groups of subjects were included: (1) normal subjects with no history of ophthalmic surgery, corneal diseases, and topical antiglaucoma medication uses (normal eyes); these were subjects who visited for glaucoma evlaution or who were scheduled to undergo cataract surgery; and (2) subjects who diagnosed with RCE.
CET values of 57 eyes of 57 normal subjects and 30 eyes of 26 RCE patients were measured three times using the epithelial map mode of the Cirrus OCT® device (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany). CET values of epithelial map were evaluated in 25 sectors: 1 sector within 0-2 mm in diameter, 8 sectors within 2-5 mm diameter, 8 sectors within 5-7 mm diameter, and 8 sectors within 7-9 mm diameter. Repeatability of measurements was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), coefficient of variation (CoV), and within-subject standard deviation (Sw).
The average of central CET was 48.34 ± 3.73 μm in normal eyes and 50.92 ± 9.12 μm in RCE eyes. Among a total of 25 sectors, the normal eyes showed high repeatability (ICC > 0.75, CoV 2.17-5.29%, and Sw 0.76-1.65) in 23 sectors except for 2 sectors (7-9 mm superior and inferotemporal), and the RCE eyes showed high repeatability (ICC > 0.75, CoV 3.82-9.55%, Sw 1.37~2.75) in 19 sectors except for 6 sectors (5-7mm: superonasal and superotemporal, and 7-9 mm: superior, superonasal, inferonasal, and inferotemporal). In both normal and RCE eyes, repeatability showed a decreasing trend as the diameter increased.
Except for a several peripheral sectors epithelial map of the Cirrus OCT® provides repeatable CET measurements in both normal and RCE eyes.
