After prospective power calculation, pupil diameter (PD) of participants with healthy eyes was measured with Colvard in low mesopic conditions once and with Penta without and with glare, PupX in scotopic (SC), mesopic (MC) and photopic conditions (PC) three times each.
36 eyes were included. Mean PD was 6.05 mm for Colvard, 5.79 mm for Penta without, 3.42 mm with glare, 7.26 mm for PupX in SC, 4.67 mm in MC and 3.66 mm in PC. PD of Penta without glare was significantly different to PupX in SC and MC (both p<0.001), but not significantly different to Colvard (p=0.086). No significant difference was found between Penta with glare and PupX in PC (p=0.647). Consecutive measurements with Penta without and with glare were not significantly different (p=0.535; p=0.671) with maximum differences of 1.29 and 0.96 mm between measurements. Significant differences were found in PupX in SC (p<0.001), MC (p=0.026) and PC (p<0.001) with maximum differences of 0.60 mm in SC and 1.10 mm in MC and PC.
Penta was not suitable for screening prior to refractive surgery due to relevant differences to PD measured with PupX in SC. Favorable results were found for Penta with glare and PupX in PC and in terms of repeatability of Penta and PupX.
