To evaluate refractive and visual parameters related to distance, intermediate and near vision after cataract surgery of a RayOne EMV IOL.
CLINICA BAVIERA - AIER - Eye Group. Spain
Retrospective study performed in 331 eyes who underwent phacoemulsification (cataract surgery) and implantation of a monofocal with extended range of vision IOL (RayOne EMV, Rayner Surgical, England) at Clinica Baviera. A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed before and after the operation. The minimum follow-up was 3 months. The main outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance (CDVA), uncorrected intermediate (UIVA), uncorrected near (UNVA), and manifest refraction. Defocus curves and contrast sensitivity also were evaluated. Visual acuities were measured at logMar, Jaeger (J) and decimal (d) scales.
The study included 331 eyes with a preop mean SE (spherical equivalent) of 0.38 diopters (+/- 2,99) with a CDVA 0.25 logMar (+/- 0.26). Post op SE was -0.52 diopters (+/- 0.57) with a CDVA 0. 06 logMar (+/- 0.12). Preop UDVA was 0.25 (d) (+/- 0.21), UNVA was 12.35(J) (+/- 5.11). Post op data was a UDAV of 0.76 (d) (+/- 0.22), a UNVA of 7.25 (J) (+/- 3.48). There was a significant improvement in all distances when comparing with the preop values. When analyzing binocular optical performance (n= 115 patients) post op UDVA was 0.91 (d) (+/- 0.15); UIVA was 5.77 (J) (+/- 2.63) and UNVA was 5.09 (J) (+/- 2.94). Defocus curve and contrast sensitivity were also measured.
RayOne EMV IOL improved distance, intermediate and near vision in patients with cataract. EMV IOL showed good refractive results, efficacy and safety. These lenses improve near and intermediate optical performance when compared to the results of standard monofocal IOL published elsewhere. Defocus curve also showed a better performance of EMV lenses at IVA and NVA when compared to a standard monofocal IOL. Contrast sensitivity curves were comparable with a standard monofocal IOL curves published in the literature.
