Purpose

To investigate visual acuity and refractive outcomes in patients with high axial length(AL) myopia (>24.5 mm) following cataract surgery

Setting

A single-center retrospective chart review

Methods

A retrospective review of eyes with axial myopia that underwent cataract surgery. Pre-operative, postoperative month 1 (POM1), and POM12 assessments of uncorrected-visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent (SE)and refractive prediction error (RPE) were done

Results

1344 eyes in total were included. Mean UCVA change between preop and POM1;POM12 visits was -0.34 ± 0.44, and -0.41 ± 0.42 logMAR, respectively (P<0.001). MeanBCVA change between preop and POM1; POM12 visits was -0.19 ± 0.24 and -0.18 ±0.26 logMAR, respectively (P<0.001). 71.0% and 93.3% of eyes were within ±0.50 Dand ±1.00 D SE at POM1, while 68.0% and 91.0% of eyes were within ±0.50 D and±1.00 D RPE at POM1

Conclusions

Cataract surgery in patients with high axial length myopia provides acceptable visual acuity and refractive outcomes
