To evaluate the visual efficacy of a new pseudophakic lens with extended depth of focus (EDOF).

Clinica de Ojos Dr Nano, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A case series prospective study, non-randomized, non-comparative, single-center was performed, on patients who underwent cataract surgery, in whom the Extend lens (Hanita Lenses, Israel) was bilaterally implanted. The optical design of this lens has a modified aspheric surface. Emmetropia was sought in each eye and the main parameter to be measured was the uncorrected, far, intermediate, and near vision, evaluated by a defocus curve 6 months after surgery.  The number of eyes and the logMAR values achieved for far, intermediate (defocuses between -0.5 to -1.5 D), and near vision (defocuses between -2.0 and -3.0 D) were counted. Demographic aspects of the population (age, sex) were also considered.

A total of 16 patients (32 eyes) were included, with a mean age was 70.5 ±2.5 years (67-74). The spherical equivalent obtained at 6 months after surgery was -0.05 ±0.25 D (-0.5 to 0.5) and the uncorrected distance visual acuity achieved was -0.04 ±0.04 logMAR (-0.1 to 0.0)

In the defocus curve, a mean value of -0.03 logMAR (0 D defocus) was obtained for far vision, 0.17 logMAR for intermediate vision (-1.5 D defocus), and 0.23 logMAR for near vision (-3.0 D defocus). In the intermediate vision range at 1 meter, half of the patients had 0.08 logMAR (all the cases between 0 to 0.2).

The visual efficacy obtained with this new EDOF lens has performed very well in far and intermediate vision, also giving acceptable near vision capability between 40 to 67 cm, showing the expected behavior for an EDOF lens.
