To compare the safety, performance and outcomes of surgical phacoemulsification technology between two operating platforms: torsional (Ozil technology) & transversal (Ellips FX technology) a prospective comparative study
Narayana Nethralaya Superspeciality Eye Hospital , Bengaluru, Karnataka , India
200 eyes of 200 patients were randomised into 2 groups, patients underwent preoperative assessment consisting of ocular examination, OCT Macula, Specular microscopy & Pachymetry. Following randomisation,2 senior surgeons performed phacoemulsification using either torsional or transversal technologies, with standardised phaco machine settings and fluidics during phaco for various steps of the surgery, such as nucleus removal techniques ,epinucleus removal etc. Pre & post-operative evaluation for above-mentioned parameters was done. Intraoperative parameters such as power, vacuum, aspiration flow rate, etc were recorded. Operative outcome measures such as ultrasound time mean case time was noted.
The mean ultrasound case time and the median case time was significantly lesser in the Ozil group (p <0.01). Intra operatively, better followability, ease of chopping and reduced chatter was noted in the Ozil group as compared to the EllipsFx group
Results show ultrasound time & mean case time using torsional (Ozil technology) was lesser than that using transversal (EllipxFx technology). The Ozil group performed significantly well in the overall ease and efficiency of nucleus management during phacoemulsification
