Purpose

To evaluate visual outcomes with the three possible bilateral combinations of the Vivinex Gemetric and Vivinex Gemetric Plus trifocal IOLs (HOYA Surgical Optics).

Setting

Multicenter clinical trial, randomized, prospective.

Methods

124 patients underwent bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of Vivinex Gemetric (G-G), Vivinex Gemetric Plus (GP-GP) or the combination of Vivinex Gemetric and Vivinex Gemetric Plus (G-GP). Cylinder powers up to 3.00D were included. First eye’s in the G-GP group were implanted with Gemetric. No test of distance or near dominance was mandated. Postop 6-months; photopic uncorrected and distance corrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity (VA), and binocular defocus curve testing was performed.

Results

First eyes implanted with Vivinex Gemetric IOL (n=72) achieved mean photopic uncorrected and corrected distance, intermediate and near VA of 0.07, 0.13, 0.16 logMAR and -0.02, 0.11, 0.12 logMAR, and for Vivinex Gemetric Plus (n=51) 0.08, 0.17, 0.11 and 0.00, 0.13, 0.06 logMAR. Mean binocular defocus curves show superior outcomes for G-G at far and intermediate (-1.5 D) and for GP-GP at near (-3 D) where distance and near VAs remain within 0.25 lines between the groups. G-GP demonstrated similar VA results to G-G at distance and to GP-GP at near. Intermediate VA results were superior for G-GP and G-G versus GP-GP.

Conclusions

All bilateral combinations achieved excellent results for corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate and near VA. Pairing G-GP shows similar VA performance to G-G at distance and to GP-GP at near and achieves the widest range of continuous high-quality vision of the three bilateral options.
