Purpose
To compare patients' results and satisfaction with presbyopia-correcting intra-ocular lens (IOL) after the second eye operation versus the first eye operation.
Setting
Ein Tal Eye Center, Israel.
Methods
A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent uneventful bilateral cataract surgery with multifocal (MF) and extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL between 2017-2022. One month after surgery complete ophthalmic examination was performed, including visual acuity and refraction. A self-reported satisfaction questionnaire was filled out.
Results
Ninety-one patients underwent bilateral IOL implantation (43 EDOF, 48 MF). In both groups, no significant difference was found when comparing objective visual acuity results between first and second eye surgery. In the MF group, there was a statistically significant improvement in patients’ perception of their uncorrected far, intermediate and near vision, and spectacle independence for all ranges after the second eye operation compared with the first eye. For the EDOF IOL group, there was an improvement in patients' perception of their uncorrected vision, but it was not statistically significant. A statistically significant improvement was found in the spectacle independence for far and intermediate vision after the second eye surgery.
Conclusions
Although there was no improvement in the objective visual outcomes, patient satisfaction after presbyopia-correcting IOL implantation significantly improved after the second eye surgery with better spectacle independence. Patients unsatisfied after surgery of the first eye may be reassured of expected improvement after the surgery of the fellow eye.
