Purpose

Assessment visual parameters to distance, intermediate and near vision, patient-reported visual function, spectacle independence and satisfaction after bilateral implantation of two models of a trifocal diffractive intraocular lens, in a large series of cases.

Setting

Clínica Baviera, Spain - AIER Eye Group

Methods

Retrospective comparative study after phacoemulsification for removal the crystalline lens and bilateral implantation of same diffractive trifocal intraocular lens, using two models: RayOne trifocal IOL (G1), FineVision Micro F IOL (G2), between the years 2019 to 2022. Complete ophthalmologic examination was performed before and after operation. Preoperative astigmatism required was < 1.5 D. Patients with a minimum of three-months follow-up data were included. Main outcome measures were UDVA, CDVA, UIVA, UNVA, manifest refraction. Spectacle independence, visual function and patient satisfaction were assessed using CatQuest-9F.

Results

34320 patients: 4335 of G1 and 29985 of G2, with mean age (years) of 57.4 ± 7. G1: preoperative SE, mean 1.61 ± 2.17 D, postoperative SE 0.09 ± 0.38 D, UDVA 0.90 ± 0.13 decimal, UIVA 3.89 ± 1.57 Jaeger, UNVA 2.20 ± 1.16 Jaeger, CDVA 0.94 ± 0.10 decimal. G2: SE mean was 1.46 ± 2.25 D, SE 0.04 ± 0.51 D, UDVA 0.90 ± 0.13 decimal, UIVA 3.87 ± 1.73 Jaeger, UNVA 1.82 ± 1.12 Jaeger, CDVA 0.94 ± 0.10 decimal. Patients who declared not to use glasses to distance: G1 99.6%, G2 99.7%. In G1 99.5%, G2 99.6% not use glasses for intermediate vision. In G1 99.7%, G1 95.9% not use glasses for near. In GH 96.8 % and 91.2%, G1 98.6% and 99.2%, G2 96.2% and 99.3%, respectively do not report dysphotopsias. G1 97.9%, G2 98.5% were satisfied with the result.

Conclusions

The two models trifocal diffractive IOL implant, after removal the cryslalline lens, provided good visual performance at all distances, excellent levels of patient-report independence of glasses, good visual function and satisfaction and very low levels of visual disturbance, with a high safety profile.
