Purpose
Ophthalmic emergency triage is essential for prompt recognition of urgent cases. The purpose of the present study is to propose a fast, accurate, and reproducible coding scale
Setting
An educational lecture was applied first then a prospective consecutive series.
Methods
The RESCUE coding system was adopted and changed to suit the Egyptian hospitals. An educational lecture was applied to the nurses and the ophthalmology residents.
Redness, pain, loss of vision, and the risk for an open eye were identified and assigned a score ranging from 0 to 12. Color coding was assigned based on increasing scoring: 0-3 white, 4-7 green, 8-12 yellow code. After one month of application of the coding system the results were collected.
Results
After one month the data were collected and accordingly, the establishment of an evening economic specialist clinic to receive the non emergency cases coming in the evening shifts was done which decreased the burden on the emergency department to allow for the true emergencies to be prioritized.
Conclusions
Ocular Emergency triage and coding is a good way to detect true emergencies.
