Purpose
Gonisoscopy is considered as a crucial step in the diagnosis of glaucoma. It is usually a simple and informative exam. Though, it's still time and effort consuming for young ophthalmologists.The purpose is to evaluate the perception of ophthalmologists in training of their gonioscopy learning experience under the program of specialized training in ophthalmology.
Setting
Department of ophthalmology, Mohammed VI university hospital, Oujda , Morocco
Methods
A cross-sectional electronic survey for was conducted with ophthalmologists in training. The survey in ten questions a collect parameters, in particular the level of training, the previous level training in gonioscopy, confidence in performing the procedure, level of satisfaction with training formats received, barriers potential and improvements to the training program. Respondents have were also invited to provide additional comments. Their complete responses were analyzed.
Results
in our study, 23,1% of residents were in their first , 23,1% in seond year and 15,4% in third year. Concerning confidence of practicing gonisociopy, 30,8% felt a lack of confidence. When asked about the satisfaction of learning amount of training they received to practice gonioscopy , on a scale from 1 ( unsatisfied) -5( extremely satisfied) : the responses by "1" and "2" percentage was 69,3%. This percentage was around 53,9% when asked abou the quality of gonioscopy practice.Same percentage was found while responding to the amount of learning received in goniocopy interpretation. In this paramaeter, none was extremly satisfied. The main means used to learn gonioscopy by our participants were : Self-directed learning via online materials.
Conclusions
Teaching formats, tell us what consultant teaching, self-directed learning and online tutorials small groups were all well catered for. Lack of training was seen as the main obstacle in the trustworthy group. This study highlights the dissatisfaction with the current training program en gonioscopy and a lack of confidence in performing the procedure .To conclude : Appropriate modifications to the specialized training program in ophthalmology could improve the learning experience of gonioscopy.
