Purpose

Enhanced corneal healing after ocular surgery improves patient quality of life and reduces the risk of infection. Systane Hydration is a new lubricating drop proven to enhance outcomes after cataract surgery. This study aimed to assess the impact of Systane Hydration on corneal healing after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Setting

Private practice laser vision correction clinic of Adelaide Eye and Laser Centre, Adelaide, Australia.

Methods

This prospective, double blind, randomised controlled trial compared patient reported outcomes and clinical assessment of corneal healing of thirty patients pre and post bilateral PRK laser surgery with contralateral artificial tears. One eye received preservative free Systane Hydration and the other preservative free Refresh Plus. Post-operatively at day 4 and day 30 after bilateral PRK for myopia, comparative comfort questionnaire data,  photographic assessment of corneal healing, epithelial thickness mapping, tear film osmolarity, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity data were collected.

Results

Eyes receiving Systane Hydration showed comparatively better comfort at both day 4 and day 30 post-operatively (p<0.05) using a modified dry eye questionnaire. Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity testing in the Systane Hydration eyes trended towards significant improvement compared to the fellow eye at one month. No significant difference was seen in epithelial thickness mapping, fluorescein staining, or tear film osmolarity at either time point.

Conclusions

Systane Hydration provides benefit to patient comfort post PRK treatment and trends towards providing improved visual outcomes. Systane Hydration instillation after corneal surgery is recommended to enhance the patient experience.
