Purpose

An interdisciplinary call to action to change the idea that presbyopia is a normal irreversible aging process with an optical treatment model to a health promotion model

of Ocular Fitness & Prevention. A plan for awareness and education of the physiological effects of the loss of dynamic accommodation biomechanical & muscular fitness is presented. The objective of the present study was to collate, and report published evidence on presbyopia burden, prevalence and impact on quality of life.

Setting

Ace Vision Group; 2941 Kent Rd Silver Lake, OH 44224

Methods

A literature review of the modern understanding of presbyopia and the clinical impacts worldwide was conducted, including prevalence, diagnostic methods, treatment, and economic impact. Specific reference is made to a plan of action for reducing ocular pathologies associated with presbyopia. Awareness programs of clinical pathologies such as heart disease and breast cancer were used as models. he objective of the present study was to collate and report published evidence on presbyopia burden (prevalence, impact on patient quality of life and associated costs).

Results

1.8 billion people (prevalence, 25%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.7–2.0 billion [23%–27%]) globally with presbyopia in 2022, 826 million (95% CI, 686–960 million) of whom had near VI because they had no, or inadequate, vision correction. Global unmet need for presbyopia correction in 2022 is estimated to be 42.9% (95% confidence interval41.2-44.6).

Conclusions

Key strategies for reducing ocular pathologies caused by presbyopia include promoting crucial prevention and longevity behaviors. Raising public awareness of the importance of ocular health as an integral component of general health and fitness. Presbyopia awareness is a critical need to shift the paradigm.
