We used the ReLEx® SMILE technology on the femtosecond laser platform VISUMAX 500 (Carl ZEISS) for the correction of ultra-low myopia with a spherical component from -0.5 D to -3.0 D and astigmatism (cylinder) from -0.25 D to -2.5 D in 74 eyes (37 patients, including 22 females and 15 males). It should be noted that the sphere- cylindrical sum of refraction in all cases did not exceed -3.0 D. Minimal lenticule thickness was 30 microns. Follow-up period was up to 12 months.
Maximum lenticule thickness was 52.5±14.8 microns. Mean sphere-equivalent (SE) of the patients with ultralow myopia has changed from -1.99±0.91 D pre-op to -0.05±22 D in 12 months post-op. 12 months post-op predictability was within ±0.50 D in 70 eyes (90.9%), and ±0.75 D in all eyes (100%). 12 months after low myopia ReLEx® SMILE surgery, the average efficacy and safety indices were 1.05 and 1.07, respectively.
ReLEx® SMILE technology can be successfully applied for the correction of low myopia and it is safe, effective, stable and predictable laser vision correction with good visual results, postoperative comfort and patient satisfaction
