Refractive Surgery Among Family Members On Same Day

PURPOSE: Performing Refractive Surgery on First Degree family members has been thought as a double edged sword. The purpose of this study was to say, when a thorough workup, uneventful surgeries are done in well equipped centres, is a pro or con.
SETTING: It is a hospital based study
METHOD: 40 families, which included first degree Family members (Total 80 patients) of uneventful refractive surgery ( Includes cases of SMILE, Femto LASIK, Trans PRK , Microkeratome LASIK, ICL ). Post operatively there functional outcome and patient satisfaction, were assessed. In terms of questionnaire, which range from 1-10 (1- Total dissatisfaction 10 – completely satisfied). The follow up is for 1 year.
RESULTS: Out of 80 patients, 60 patients gave a score of 9, 10 patients gave score of 10, 10 patients gave a score of 8.The score of 8 patients, are those who underwent Trans PRK , because of slow recovery and dryness.
CONCLUSION: Functional outcome and patient satisfaction appeared to be excellent with no rejection factor towards the doctor or hospital, following same family member surgery on same day. Refractive surgeries will gain for the doctors and hospital if done with thorough scientific workup, uneventful surgery with advance technology.
