Purpose

To compare steropsis perceived on DIY 3 D opthalmic video recording system and standard 2 D viewing.

Setting

The study was done in an institutional setup

Methods

Surgicalvideos were recorded using DIY 3D recording assembly made by mounting two cameras on either side of beamsplitter and video outputs fused live in side to side format usingwedding video mixer.standard 2D video and pseudostereo video made by duplicating2D video to side by side format served as control1,2.3Videos:cataract surgery, scleral buckling and intravitreal injection were shown to 20subjects and evaluated for stereopsis, color, resolution, overall quality and asked for stereopsis of steps relevant to skill transfer:depth of AC,Phaco trench, IOL position, depth of corneal incision in cataract, crescent depth in buckling and needle depth in intravitreal injection.Stereo and psudostereo images were viewed onVRBOX and 2D on 13 inch laptop

Results

Statistically significant higher proportion of subjects rated stereo videos better than control for depth perception of most surgical steps except keratome depth incision. The resolution was rated to be slightly better in standard 2D videos

Conclusions

3D DIY recording systems provide better stereopsis than conventional lap top viewing and may have a role in surgical skill transfer in future
