Purpose
Background/Rationale: Amblyopia is a condition in which the brain fails to process input from one or both eyes resulting in decreased vision in the eye. The most common treatment for amblyopia is patching of the good eye to force the amblyopic eye to improve. Treatment is effective if done at an early age, however its effectiveness decreases in older children and adults. Dichoptic therapy aims in treating both eyes together by presenting high contrast stimuli on the amblyopic eye and lower contrast in non-amblyopic eye.
Aim: To assess the efficacy of Bynocs Dichoptic Therapy in patient with amblyopia to improve visual acuity and stereo acuity
Setting
Krishna eye centre, Mumbai, India
Methods
: In this study, 320 subjects were enrolled with a median age of 23 (IQR 13-42.5) years. Subjects who were diagnosed with anisometropic or strabismic residual amblyopia and did not respond to 100% compliance of 6 hours/day patching for at least 3 months and full time spectacle correction were included in the study. Subjects with deprivational amblyopia or any other ocular comorbidity or neuronal defects were excluded. Subjects were given Bynocs Dichoptic Therapy activities 30 minutes/day for 5 days in a week for 6 weeks
Results
: In the cohort, 320 subjects were included and there was an improvement of median 4 LogMAR lines with median pre therapy visual acuity of 0.50 (0.3-0.6) to 0.10 (0.0-0.20) post therapy. 150 subjects had no stereopsis, out of which 135 (90%) developed stereopsis post therapy. Median change of stereopsis was 600 (180-800) sec of arc to 125 (100-200) sec of arc.
Conclusions
The new Bynocs dichoptic therapy is an effective treatment for amblyopia in improving the visual acuity and stereoacuity in all age groups
