To evaluate the acute effect of intravitreal injection (IVI) procedure with the preoperative povidone-iodine application on the non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).
A prospective observational study
Treatment-naive nAMD patients receiving anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections were included. All participants had applied a pre-IVI asepsis protocol with povidone-iodine. Non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) was recorded before and after the IVI procedure.
Thirty-eight patients with a mean age of 62.3 ± 8.8 years were included. The mean of NIBUT before the IVI procedure was 8.8 ± 5.6 sec, which declined to 5.2 ± 2.8 sec after the IVI procedure (p=0.004).
IVI procedure of anti-VEGF agents with the preoperative povidone-iodine application leads to a decline in NIBUT in the short term. IVI procedures should be kept in mind as a potential reason for evaporative dry eye disease.
