Purpose
Conjunctival nevus is usually characterized by a change in size and pigmentation
most often in puberty and presence of cystic spaces. Cystic spaces clinically and in ASOCT
points to a possible diagnosis of nevus. The aim of our study was to correlate the presence of cystic
spaces seen clinically as well as in ASOCT in patients with histopathologically proven diagnosis of
conjunctival nevus.
Setting
Retrospective case study
Methods
Out of a total 45 eyes with clinical and ASOCT evidence of nevus over 3 years , six eyes had undergone
excision and proven to be conjunctival nevus.
Results
Mean age at presentation was 27.17 years (11-46 years). In 5 eyes werein histopathology was suggestive of nevus, cystic spaces were seen both clinically and in ASOCT. However, cystic spaces could be demonstrated in histopathoogy in only one eye. ASOCT has limitations in cases with dense pigmentation and very small cysts .
Conclusions
Histopathology is the gold standard for confirmation of a diagnosis of conjunctival nevus. However, presence of cystic spaces as described in literature and in our series, both clinically and in ASOCT seems to be reliable indicator of a nevus.Although investigations like ASOCT can compliment clinical diagnosis and decision making , they have their limitations Hence, in case of doubt these are best excised to confirm histopathological nature of the lesion.
