To assess evidence-based summaries (EBS) coverage, usefulness and clinical applicability of recommendations in cornea, external disease and cataract.

EBS are regularly updated online resources, and based on the best available evidence, include actionable recommendations for a specific topic level that includes several related questions. EBS are used for clinical decision making to help physicians and stakeholders, especially as a consultation tool in emergencies.

EBSs with the highest update and coverage (Dynamed, UpToDate, Best Practice) were selected. A list of topics was designed by subspecialty, based on a manual of ophthalmological emergencies (The Wills Eye Manual: Office and Emergency Room Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Disease 8th edition). 3 authors independently assessed the EBSs, comparing the availability of each topic in EBSs. Discrepancies were reviewed by a fourth author. For the available topics, update date, number of reported recommendations and number of references were retrieved. A matrix of recommendations was developed and reviewed by a specialist with experience in the subspecialty. For this study, topics in Cornea, external disease and cataract were selected.

Of 213 topics retrieved in all sub-specialties,57 topics in cornea, external disease and cataract were assessed. Dynamed,UpToDate and BestPractice included several corneal, external diseases and cataract related diseases as single topics or included in other topics. UpToDate and Dynamed developed recommendations using the GRADE system. UpToDate and BestPractice reported last updated date and literature review period. BestPractice and UpToDate included direct link to guidelines and other resources.

BestPractice and Dynamed have the option of select specific ophthalmology topics. BestPractice as not categorized topics, and Dynamed categorized by sub-specialty (Cataract(4), corneal disease(8), trauma(13), visual impairment(5) and others).

EBSs include some ophthalmology topics, mainly general topics, with good quality evidence.
