The purpose of the work is to investigate the results of using eye drops based on trehalose in cancer patients with dry eye disease who underwent long courses (2 weeks - 1.5 months) of treatment with linear accelerators.

The research was conducted on the basis of the Vinnytsia National Medical University in the period from June to November 2022.

20 people aged from 33 to 80 years with clinical manifestations of DED on the background of radiation therapy were examined, who were divided into experimental and control groups. Eye drops based on trehalose were prescribed in the experimental group, and tear substitutes with preservatives based on: polyvinyl alcohol and povidone were prescribed in the control group. The examination included general and special indicators of tear production, tear film breakup time, total tear production (Schirmer I test), ophthalmological research methods. The observation period was 20 days.

It was found that in the subjects of the research group, a significant decrease in the manifestations of irritation of the front surface of the eye (conjunctival hyperemia and foreign body sensation), an increase in tear film breakup time, total tear production and Schirmer I test by 27% compared to the same indicator in the control group. According to the results of the survey, patients from the second group, who used eye drops based on trehalose, noted good tolerance of the drug without the appearance of side effects.

In individuals with dry eye disease, the clinical symptoms of which developed against the background of radiation therapy, the long-term use of trehalose-based eye drops improved the functional indicators of the front part of the eye. This makes it possible to recommend the use of eye drops based on trehalose in the complex treatment of dry eye disease in cancer patients on the background of radiation therapy, to improve the quality of life.
