The purpose of the retrospective study was an attempt to determine the prevalence of cataracts in patients with keratoconus (KC) and the effect of cataract surgery on visual acuity.

District Railway Hospital in Katowice.

The medical records of 516 patients with keratoconus were analyzed.

The results showed that 5.6% of patients had cataracts not yet eligible for surgery, while 6.0% underwent cataract surgery after corneal transplantation. The mean gain in corrected visual acuity was 44±15 ETDRS letters. Indicating that cataract surgery in KC can significantly improve visual acuity. These findings suggest that cataract surgery is a viable option for improving vision in patients with KC and cataracts.
