Purpose

Objective:

The management of corneal haze has always been a challenge, and various medications were used to decrease it to avoid the need to look for surgical alternatives.

To report the new role found for Ialuvit(0.05% Cyanocobalamin B, 0.05% taurine,0.5% sodium hyaluronate)eye drops in management of corneal haze in post PRK patients and cases with adenoviral keratitis.

Setting

Mediclinic  AlNoor Hospital eye clinic reveives a lot of patients with variable corneal infections, but the most chalenging ones are those who develop haze either post an infection or PRK surgery.

Methods

15  eyes of 15 patients  with corneal haze ,8 following recent PRK surgery,

and 7 with  active adenoviral keratitis were properly selected.

All cases had significant central sub-epithelial corneal haze extending on a range of 3-5 mm on the corneal surface.

All patients were given a Ialuvit 4 times daily continuous for 2 weeks besides their regular treatment.

Slit lamp phtoghraphy was taken for each patient to document the depth ,extent, and size of the haze for monitoring.

Results

Significant improvement of the haze  in all the cases was noticed and  seen by slit lamp examination, and improve in visual acuity as well.

Treatmnent was continued the after for one month to provide maintenace .

Some patients also had a change in refraction and refrained from wearing glasses from the error created by  the corneal haze.

Conclusions

Ialuvit  eye drops has been reported to improve the surgical recovery following epi-off crosslinking, but its role in recovery of haze has not been documented yet. This short study hopes to spot the light on this new role ,and open the chance for a  multicentered study to proof this role further.

Corneal haze is a distressing sitauation, and finding a non surgical alternative is always a better option.
