Purpose
To evaluate the clinical outcomes during a 12-month follow-up of an intraocular lens (IOL) combining diffractive multifocal and an extended depth-of-focus profiles
Setting
University Eye Clinic Svjetlost, Zagreb, Croatia
Methods
Uncomplicated phacoemulsification refractive lens exchange surgery with bilateral implantation of the presbyopia-correcting Tecnis Synergy IOL (Johnson and Johnson Vision) was conducted in 240 eyes of 120 patients. Changes in uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuity, uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 40 cm, and manifest refraction were evaluated during 12 months after surgery. Adverse events were also recorded.
Results
A significant improvement was observed at 1 week after surgery in monocular UDVA, UNVA, and CDVA (p<0.001). An additional significant improvement was observed in monocular UDVA and UNVA at 1 month (p<0.001). Binocularly, at 12 months, a total of 96.5% and 97.1% of patients achieved binocular UDVA and UNVA of 20/25 or better respectively. Concerning postoperative mesopic UNVA, all right and left eyes achieved a value of 20/30 or better at 3 and 12 months after surgery. Significant correlations of 1-month UDVA and residual astigmatism were found in right (r=-0.60) and left eyes (r=-0.439) (p<0.001). YAG capsulotomy was required in 11% of eyes.
Conclusions
Refractive lens exchange surgery with implantation of the Tecnis Synergy IOL provides a successful distance and near visual rehabilitation which is maintained during a 12-month follow-up, being the distance visual outcome especially sensitive to astigmatic residual refractive errors
