Purpose

To update postoperative functional results and the YAG incidence for posterior capsule opacification (PCO)

following implantation of four different kinds of multifocal intraocular lenses in Japanese eyes.

Setting

Nishi Eye Hospital, Osaka, Japan

Methods

705 eyes with senile cataract without other severe ocular diseases that underwent uneventful cataract surgery (femto cataract surgery for FineVision or Intensity, and standard PEA for PanOptix and Tecnis Synergy) and implantion with trifocal intraocular lenses PanOptix (Alcon), FineVision (BVI), Tecnis Synergy (J&J) or a pentafocal intraocular lens Intensity (Hanita Lenses) were retrospectively investigated.

Outcome measures were the 3 month-postoperative logMAR visual outcomes, defocus curves, and YAG capsulotomy incidence for  PCO.

Results

PanOptix was implanted in 337 eyes, FineVision was in 319 eyes,Tecnis Synergy was in 27 eyes and Intensity was in 22 eyes.

The best corrected distance/distance corrected near visual acuity (LogMAR) were -0.06±0.08/0.21±0.15 for PanOptix, -0.06±0.08/0.14±0.15 for FineVision, 0.07±0.08/0.22±0.12 for Tecnis Synergy, and 0±0.11/0.09±0.14 for Intensity. The defocus curves showed good vision at 50cm for Intensity, at 40cm for PanOptix and at 30cm for FineVision. No severe symptoms of hallo and glare were observed. The data will be updated.

Only one case of FineVision underwent YAG capsulotomy 3 month postoperatively. 3 year postoperatively, 21 eyes / 337 eyes for PanOptix and 74 eyes / 319 eyes for FineVision underwent YAG capsulotomy.

Conclusions

3 month postoperatively, each of the four multifocal intraocular lenses showed comparably good functional results. FineVision offered the wide range of visual functions for far and near distance, in spite of the relatively weak intermediate performance. Intensity tended to show good visual performance for intermediate and near vision. Each IOL was almost free from critically disturbing early PCO but later increase of YAG rates for FineVision had better be further investigated.
