Purpose

To compare the modulation transfer function (MTF) and higher order aberrations (HOA) in eyes implanted with diffractive and diffractive-refractive trifocal IOL.

Setting

Private Tertiary Eye Care Hospital, Mumbai, India.

Methods

A retrospective study where subjects implanted with diffractive trifocal (Acrysof IQPanOptix, Alcon) and diffractive refractive trifocal (Optiflex Trio, Biotech), aged between 40 -75 years, post-operative best correctedvisual acuity 0.2logMAR or better, pre operative corneal astigmatism <-1.50D and cataract grade NS I-III were included. Subjects with any ocular pathologies, irregular astigmatism, previous refractive surgery, and intra-operative complications were excluded. At 1 month follow up, internal HOA (3rd, 4th and 5th order) and MTF at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 cycles per degrees were obtained using HOYA i-Trace aberrometer for 4mm fixed pupil and compared among different groups.

Results

One hundred and fifty five and 80 eyes were implanted with PanOptix and Trio IOL respectively. The Mean±SD age of the subjects implanted with Trio and Panoptics IOL were 57.79±6.70 and 59.76±7.15 years respectively. The mean±SD angle alpha of PanOptic and Trio IOL was 035±1.47  and 0.42±0.49 respectively (Two sample t test, p=0.2).Higher order aberrations were found to be similar in both the IOLs (Two sample t test, p>005). MTF were also similar with both the IOL at all spatial frequencies (One Way ANOVA, p>0.05).

Conclusions

We noted similar HOA and MTF with diffractive and diffractive- refractive IOL.
