Purpose
To evaluate the visual outcomes after bilateral implantation of the Vivinex Gemetric trifocal IOL family (HOYA Surgical Optics).
Setting
Augenklinik Petrisberg, Trier, Germany, multicenter clinical trial, prospective, randomized, open-label, bilateral.
Methods
A total of six patients underwent cataract surgery at this study center with bilateral implantation of Vivinex Gemetric (G-G) or Vivinex Gemetric Plus (GP-GP) IOLs. Four patients were included in the G-G group and two in the GP-GP group. IOL cylinder powers ranging from non-toric to T3 were implanted. A 6‑months follow-up was performed, including photopic uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuity (VA) testing at distance, intermediate and near, as well as binocular defocus curve testing.
Results
Monocular results (n=12) for photopic VA testing at 6 months post-op at far, intermediate and near showed corrected values of -0.086; 0.117; 0.108 logMAR. 100% of the eyes achieved a monocular CDVA of 0.2 logMAR or better at 6 months post-op. The binocular VA-testing (n=6) showed that patients achieved mean binocular photopic UDVA, UIVA and UNVA of ‑0.074, 0.018 and 0.075 logMAR. The mean binocular photopic CDVA, DCIVA and DCNVA was at -0.148, 0.025 and 0.058 logMAR. The mean binocular defocus curve at 6 months post-op showed VA values of 0.2 logMAR or better in the range of +1 D to ‑3.5 D. The mean value of VA at distance (0.0 D), intermediate (-1.5 D) and near (-3.0 D), corresponds to -0.14; 0.01 and -0.03 logMAR.
Conclusions
The performance analysis results for the Vivinex Gemetric trifocal IOL family demonstrated that all patients implanted with these new trifocal IOLs achieved excellent results for photopic uncorrected distance, intermediate and near vision. These outcomes, together with the wide range of vision shown by the mean binocular defocus curve, are in line with the results from the other investigators in this multicenter study.
