Purpose

To compare the area under the defocus curve (AUC) of binocular distance-corrected vision in the range of clear vision between patients with binocular implantation of PanOptix and Symfony targeting emmetropia in both eyes.

Setting

Previous studies have shown that the area-of-focus metric was more sensitive than traditional methods of analyzing defocus curves for differentiating between PCIOLs. PanOptix can achieve more continuous range of vision than Symfony. However, the comparison of the area under the defocus curve(AUC) between PanOptix and Symfony is currently the data gap.

Methods

In this prospective historical control study, patients implanted with Symfony previously will be involved as retrospective control group, and patients implanted with PanOptix bilaterally will be enrolled as prospective group. The primary endpoint is the AUC above 0.3 logMAR based on the binocular distance-corrected defocus curve ranging from +0.5D to -3.0D in 0.5 D steps at 3 month postoperatively. The partial AUC at distance (+0.5~-0.5D), intermediate (-0.5D~-2.0D) and near (-2.0D~-3.0D) range (Sc, Sf, Sm, Sn), binocular uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuity and spectacle independence at different distances at 3 months postoperatively were also evaluated.

Results

PanOptix group achieved larger AUC in the range of clear vision compared with Symfony group. (0.87 ±0.27, 0.67±0.13, respectively (p <0.001)). Partial AUC at distance, intermediate and near range of PanOptix group were larger than Symfony group (Sf: 0.29±0.06 vs 0.26±0.04,p=0.027; Sm: 0.37±0.13 vs 0.32±0.07,p=0.044; Sn:0.24±0.09 vs 0.10±0.05,p<0.001) The spectacle independence rates in the PanOptix group and the Symfony group were 100% and 30%, respectively (p <0.01). The UCDVA (5m), UIVA(60cm) and UNVA (40 cm) of PanOptix group were -0.02±0.06,0.02±0.07,0.02±0.08 while Symfony group were 0.02±0.04,0.10±0.07, 0.27±0.08, respectively. No significant differences were observed in MTF values (0.341± 0.040, 0.339±0.038, p>0.05).

Conclusions

Bilateral PanOptix implantation provided better full range of clear vision and spectacle independence than Symfony.
