Two Novel Extended Depth-Of-Focus Intraocular Lenses Targeted For Minimonovision: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study compared the performance of two extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Single-centre prospective randomized controlled trial at the University eye Clinic of the Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Subjects of 18 years and older with bilateral age-related cataract were selected. All subjects were randomized to undergo cataract surgery and receive either the Alcon AcrySof IQ Vivity or the Acunex Vario IOL bilaterally, targeted for minimonovision. Outcome measures were the uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) at 66cm, uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 40cm, refractive outcomes, reading speed, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and questionnaires regarding patient satisfaction, optical complaints and spectacle independence.

A total of 48 eyes of 24 subjects were included. One month postoperatively, the mean spherical equivalent (SE) was -0.07±0.49D and -0.16±0.35D for the dominant eye and -0.34±0.17D and -0.19±0.44D for the non-dominant eye for either the Vivity or the Acunex Vario-group, respectively. The mean binocular UDVA was 0.13±0.14 logMAR and 0.03±0.13 logMAR, and CDVA was -0.01±0.07 logMAR and -0.05±0.08 logMAR for the Vivity- and Acunex Vario-group, respectively. The Vivity-group had a mean binocular UIVA and UNVA of 0.12±0.11 logMAR and 0.32±0.13 logMAR. The Acunex Vario-group a mean binocular UIVA and UNVA of 0.10±0.11 logMAR and 0.21±0.15 logMAR. No significant differences were found between the two groups.

Bilateral implantation of the AcrySof IQ Vivity IOL and the Acunex Vario IOL targeted for minimonovision showed comparable results for spherical equivalent,  distance, intermediate and near visual acuity at 1 month postoperatively. The 3 month outcomes will be presented at the 41^st congress of the ESCRS in Vienna.
