First Functional Results After Implantation Of Edof- Iol With Complementary Optics Using Spherical Aberration Distribution

Purpose
To assess the visual und functional outcomes of the SIFI Mini WELL® + SIFI Mini WELL Proxa® IOL (SIFI S. p. A., Italy) complementary optic system using spherical aberrations designed to bridge the gap in near vision (30-35 cm) and reduce spectacle dependence.
Setting
International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Heidelberg, Germany.
Methods
The first results of this ongoing retrospective clinical study include 7 patients, 14 eyes and the patients were on average 71 years old, who underwent cataract surgery with implantation of the WELL Fusion™ optical system. Binocular uncorrected/ corrected distance, intermediate and near vision and best-corrected defocus curve analysis in range +1.5 to -4 were evaluated 1 (n=6), 3 (n=6), 6 (n=3) and 12 (n=2) months after surgery. Photic phenomena were measured by means of the Halo and Glare Simulator.
Results
Mean binocular visual acuity in logMAR at 1/3/6/12 months were UDVA 0.2/ 0.08/ 0.2/ 0.16; UIVA 0.05/ 0.03/ 0.09/ 0.07; UNVA 0.10/ 0.09/ 0.12/ 0.21; CDVA 0.14/ 0.05/ 0.15/ -0.02; DCIVA 0.09/0.02/0.06/0.2; DCNVA 0.14/0.1/0.08/0.13. The binocular distance-corrected defocus curve at 1 months showed a continuous visual acuity of 0.17 or better in the range of +0.5 to -3 diopters of defocus. After 3 months a continuous visual acuity of 0.15 or better was shown in the range of +0.5 to -3 diopters of defocus. After 6 months a continuous visual acuity of 0.23 or better was shown in the range of +0.5 to -3 diopters of defocus. After 12 months a continuous visual acuity of 0.08 or better was shown in the range of +0.5 to -3.5 diopters of defocus.
Conclusions
The WELL Fusion™ Optical System (Mini WELL® + Mini WELL PROXA®) showed first good functional results in distance, intermediate and near visual acuity.
A complete independence from spectacles can be reached with excellent quality of vision in all light conditions.
