Comparative Functional Assessment Of Enhanced Depth-Focus Intraocular Lens Vs Monofocal Lens In Rural India

Purpose

To compare the functional assessment of enhanced depth focus IOL VS monofocal iol in Rural India.

Setting

Drushti Eye care, an  eye hospital at yavatmal Maharashtra state INDIA ( RURAL INDIA)

Methods

30 cataract patients between the age group of 45 to 60 years were selected for bilateral implantation with either  ENHANCED DEPTH FOCUS IOL (EDOF IOL) (LUCIDIS 108M) OR MONOFOCAL IOL (ALCON SN60WF IQ) All surgeries were done by single surgeon by ALCON centurion Active sentry phaco machine at Drushti Eye care , in Rural india.
Follow up was done on 1st 7 th day and 45 day.The main outcomes were defined as uncorrected distant , intermediate and near visual acuities (UDVA,UIVA and UNVA, respectively), defocus curve and VF -14 questionnaire aimed for visual performance .

Results

The mean ± SD  binocular vision On 45 th day for EDOF UDVA, UIVA and UNVA  were 0.15 ± 0.09, 0.11 ± 0.11 and 0.12 ± 0.12 logMAR respectively. Defocus curve showed a continuous vision above 0.16 logMAR between +0.50 D and −2.50 D. Patients had good vision with mean VF-14 scores above 3 points. Specs independence was 100% for both distant and UNVA.

 

The mean ± SD   obtained on 45 th day for MONOFOCAL UDVA, UIVA and UNVA were 0.15 ± 0.13, 0.89± 0.10 and 1.00± 0.00 logMAR respectively. Defocus curve showed good vision at distance and poor vision and intermediate and near between +0.50 D and −2.50 D. Patients had good vision with mean VF-14 scores less than 3 points. Driving at night, specs independence was 100% for distant and 0 % for UNVA.

Conclusions

Both ENHANCED DEPTH FOCUS IOLS ( EDOF Iol )and monofocal iol studied provided good visual outcome for distant vision.
The EDOF iol showed better results in UDVA, UIVA and UNVA on defocus curve as smooth curve (continuous vision) Spectacle independence and patient satisfaction was better with EDOF iol patients, compared to monofocal IOls, among Rural Indian patients.
