Purpose

The objective of the present study was to report the clinical outcomes following cataract surgery and implantation of a new extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting

Oftalvist, Alicante, Spain

Methods

15 patients who underwent bilateral implantation with the AsqelioTM EDOF IOL ETLIO130C were prospectively analyzed at 3 months post-surgery. Main outcome measures were refractive error, photopic monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), uncorrected and corrected distance intermediate visual acuity (UIVA, CDIVA) at 60 cm and 80 cm, uncorrected and corrected distance near visual acuity (UNVA, CDNVA) at 40 cm. Binocular defocus curve and adverse events were also measured and reported.

Results

This study was approved by Hospital Clínico San Carlos Ethics Committee (Code 22/134-O_P, Madrid, Spain) and registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov. A 2.2-mm limbal incision was made followed by a creation of a well-centered manual capsulorhexis of 5 mm and standard phacoemulsification using the Centurion Vision System. In order to calculate the power of the IOL the the ORA system with Verifeye+ in aphakic condition was used. Detailed analysis of the defocus curves was done in order to assess the range of vergences with visual acuity better than 0.20 logMAR. Visual outcomes show functional vision for near vergence in some patients. No adverse events occurred related nor unrelated to the implants during surgery or the follow-up period.

Conclusions

This study shows the implantation of AsqelioTM EDOF IOL after cataract surgery as a safe and efficient procedure. Visual performance was satisfactory for distance and intermediate vergences, and in some cases functional vision was also obtained for near without additional correction.
