This is the case of a young (48y.o.) diabetic cataract patient for which we used the Mix&Match presbyopia correcting IOL approach, despite the lack of studies regarding this association of IOLs.
Although the patient was informed prior to his first surgery about the downsides of diffractive lenses - halos while driving during night - and the agreement was to use EDOFs, the patient decided to change his option the day of the surgery of the first eye. His main concern was about the potential need of using reading glasses and, despite all medical advice, his job being a driver, he insisted on implanting a diffractive lens. As expected, he was very disapointed with his night vision.
The options were to either exchange the recently implanted diffractive IOL or to use an EDOF on the second eye - the dominant one. He agreed with the Mix & Match diffractive/ EDOF IOL approach and the results were outstanding.
His night vision improved consistently, with a significant decrease of halos, 20/20 uncorrected distance and intermediate visual acuity, while still having a very good uncorrected reading vision.
In conclusion, there is an unmet need of consistent studies regarding the Mix & Match technique for Presbyopia correcting IOLs in young patients.
