Purpose

To measure the monocular contrast sensitivity of pseudophakic patients implanted bilaterally with a combination of two models of an EDOF new aspheric inverted meniscus intraocular lens (IOL), Art40 and Art70 (ArtIOLs, Voptica SL, Murcia, Spain). These IOLs improve the overall off-axis optical quality and induce different amounts of negative spherical aberration to increase the depth of focus.

Setting

Oftalvist clinic of Murcia; University of Murcia, Spain

Methods

Thirty cataract patients were implanted bilaterally with Art40 and Art70 IOLs with low and high values of negative spherical aberration, respectively. The refraction and through-focus visual acuities were measured 1-3 months after the last surgery. Monocular distance-corrected and uncorrected contrast sensitivity (CS) were also measured using the preset test (M1) in the CC-100 XP LED LCD screen (Topcon Healthcare Solution) under the same photopic conditions as the VA measurements.

Results

The spherical equivalent for Art40 was -0.25±0.32 D and for Art70 -0.62±0.38 D. Mean values of distance-corrected and uncorrected distance VA were close to 0 LogMAR for both models. Binocular combination (Art40/70) provided UCVA of 0.00±0.00 LogMAR at far, 0.01±0.03 LogMAR at intermediate and 0.09±0.09 LogMAR at near vision. Monocular distance-corrected CS  means values for Art40 and Art70 were 2.08±0.00 and 2.07±0.06, 2.20±0.01 and 2.16±0.17, 1.73±0.32 and 1.76±0.28, and 1.39±0.32 and 1.33±0.28 Log Units at 3, 6, 12 and 18 cycles per degree, respectively. In both cases, there were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) between Art40 and Art70 neither with or without optical correction at all tested frequencies

Conclusions

Monocular distance-corrected and uncorrected contrast sensitivity for both EDOF models (Art40 and Art70) with different depths of focus, were very similar at all spatial frequencies and comparable with monofocal IOLs.
