To evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes with a X-EDOF and EDOF intraocular lens (IOL) during a 6-month follow-up.

Veni-Vidi Eye Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey

Prospective comparative study including 40 eyes of 20 patients (42-80y) undergoing uneventful cataract surgery. Each patient was randomly assigned to one type of IOL, X-EDOF (20 eyes) or EDOF (20 eyes). Visual, refractive changes and a questionnaire about patients’ satisfaction and visual symptoms were evaluated in a 6-month follow-up. The binocular uncorrected near intermediate and distant visual acuities were also compared.

No statistically significant differences between groups were found in postoperative uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities (P=0.386). Postoperative 6 month uncorrected near (33 cm), intermediate (75 cm) and distant visual acuities were 0,21, 0,33, 0,03 logMAR in x-edof and 0,71, 0,79, 0,05 in edof groups respectively (p1,2<0.001, p3=0.541). Significantly better uncorrected near and intermediate and visual acuity were found during all follow-up in the x-edof group. Spectacle independence was achieved in most of the patients in x-edof group. Very few patients had complaints of halo and glare in x-edof group.

X-EDOF and EDOF IOLs are able to provide an effective visual restoration which is maintained during a 6-month follow-up, with a clear benefit of the X-EDOF IOL for the near and intermediate vision.
