Purpose

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) is a relatively novel intraocular lens (IOL) technology. EDOF IOLs work by creating a single elongated focal point, hence, enhancing the perceived depth of focus. This study aimed to analyse the current state of the literature related to EDOF IOLs.

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology, Bogomolets National Medical University, Kyiv, Ukraine.

Methods

An advanced search using relevant keywords was conducted within titles of all literature included in the Web of Science Core Collection (Clarivate, PA, USA) electronic database. Then, Clarivate’s built-in analysis function and biblioshiny for bibliometrix R-package (RStudio, PBC, Boston, MA, USA) were used to perform bibliometric and mapping analyses.

Results

A total of 237 papers were published in 49 sources by 809 authors from 2010 to 2023. Articles comprised 71.3% (n=169). The collaboration index was 3.58. Top-3 most prolific authors included Auffarth GU (n=16; 6.8%), Kohnen T (n=13; 5.5%), and Khoramnia R (n=11; 4.6%). Goethe (7.6%), Heidelberg (7.2%), and Sungkyunkwan (6.8%) universities were the most relevant affiliations. The corresponding author was most likely from Germany (n=35; 16.1%), the USA (n=27; 12.4%), and Spain (n=24; 11.1%). The publications received 2728 citations from 679 articles, with an average of 11.51 citations per document. The h-index was 28. Collaboration network analysis revealed that authors, institutions, and countries formed 12,  8, and 4 clusters, respectively.

Conclusions

The current study has provided a bibliometric overview of the publications related to EDOF IOLs, which is a relatively new expanding field.
