Purpose

To quantitatively evaluate the visual outcomes at one month after bilateral implantation of a novel fusion intraocular lens optical system comprising of two complementary IOLs as a viable presbyopia correction option in routine cataracts in the population of India

Setting

Included data from patients in this study who were operated between 2021 - 2022 at Shroff Eye Hospital, Mumbai, India

Methods

This study is a prospective quantitative and qualitative evaluation of 54 patients (108 eyes) who underwent bilateral implantation with Mini WELL EDOF IOL (Sifi SPA., Italy) in the dominant eye and Mini WELL PROXA EDOF IOL (Sifi Spa., Italy) in the non-dominant eye to achieve emmetropia through phacoemulsification surgery. In postoperative patients, unaided Visual Acuity (UAVA) was measured monocular and binocularly at various distances [Distance (6m), Intermediate (66cm) and Near (33cm,40 cm) Visual Acuity] at 1 week and 1-month follow-up. The Snellen chart used for distance vision, the N notation chart used for intermediate & near vision measurements.  Subjective questionnaire was collected for Halo & Glare and IOL acceptance levels.

Results

Out of 54 patients, females were 28 (51.85%) and males 26 (48.15%) respectively. The mean age of the patients was 58.5 ± 9.5yrs. At 1 week and 1 month follow-ups, with the Mini-well IOL, a majority of the population had excellent distance (87%, 89%), intermediate vision (98%, 100%) and good near vision (87%, 89%). Whereas with the Mini-well PROXA IOL there was excellent near (100%, 100%), intermediate vision (98.1%, 98.1%) and good distance vision (79.6%, 83.3%). Whereas binocularly Distance, Intermediate and Near Vision was even better than monocular. Overall > 88.50% of patients were in the category of <-1.00D refractive error post operatively, although 100% population not opted for the spectacle correction for the same

Conclusions

This evaluation concludes that post one month of implantation Mini Well IOLs showed excellent performance for the Distance, Intermediate vision and Good Near Vision whereas Mini Well PROXA performed Excellent at near, Intermediate and good far vision. The WELL Fusion combination showed excellent visual performance at all distances without disturbing haloes and glare.
