Purpose
To demonstrate how the preloaded foldable Rayner RayOne Hydrophobic BLF (RAO850B) intraocular lens (IOL) injector system can be successfully implemented in a high-volume operating theatre with video training only.
Setting
Augen-Zentrum-Nordwest, Ahaus
Methods
The new device was the RayOne Hydrophobic BLF (RAO850B) aspheric, aberration-neutral, blue light filtering IOL in cornerstone design, with 360° Amon-Apple enhanced square edge, ultra glistening-free. The IOL is implanted through a 2.2 mm incision using a preloaded injector system. It is available in powers from 0.0 D to +32.0 D, making it a lens suitable for almost all monofocal patients. Training to implement this injector system as a new device was performed using the video provided by the manufacturer. The video was emailed by the surgeon to the OR management and the nursing staff one day before the first surgery. So the the supporting surgical personnel was trained on how to remove the preloaded IOL out of the packaging and prepare it.
Results
A total of 52 eyes were implanted. No preloaded injector system had to be discarded due to user manipulation issues. The nursing staff and surgeons reported no problems with the IOL. The preloaded injector packaging was simple to open; the injector system was easy to use as it only needed one click to be closed, and the IOL could be implanted directly into the capsular bag without the need to release a lock. Refractive outcomes were very good with 80% of eyes within ±0.50D and 94% of eyes within ±1.00D of target refraction.
Conclusions
The training via video only was sufficient without the need for additional device training in the theatre. The Rayner RayOne Hydrophobic BLF (RAO850B) was found to be an ideal lens for surgeons, nursing personnel and patients due to its wide diopter range, capsular bag filling shape with post-cataract protective edge, good refractive accuracy and excellent usability.
