Methods
108 eyes from 108 subjects, aged between 40-75 years, with uncomplicated nuclear sclerosis grade II & III cataracts, were randomized to undergo phacoemulsification either with the Legion or Laureate phacosystems. Each patient was followed up for one month and evaluated for post-operative outcomes such as central corneal thickness, anterior chamber cells and flare , endothelial cell counts which were recorded on day 1 & month 1 and compared to pre-operative values. Inter-group comparison was done to analyze the intraoperative results and outcomes between the two arms.
Results
There is a statistically significant difference (p value 0.0008) in mean difference in Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) [pre-op and post-op day 1] between the groups (Leg;27.647, Lau;35.336, Mean diff;7.689). Other secondary end points, mean difference in the Endothelial Cell Count (ECC) [pre-op and post-op month 1] was also statistically significant (Leg; -66.275, Lau; -95.826, Mean diff; -29.551, p value <0.0001) favoring the Legion arm. There was statistically significant difference in the mean case time (Leg; 11.65s, Lau; 12.90s, p value 0.0013) and mean BSS volume usage (Leg; 138.6ml, Lau; 182.9ml, p value <0.0001) between the groups.
