Evaluate the anterior chamber stability and aspiration line passive vacuum for a system utilizing a synchronized infusion/aspiration pump as compared to a traditional phacoemulsification system

Carl Zeiss Meditec, Oberkochen, Germany

A spring-eye model simulating the anterior chamber of an eye was used to test the Zeiss Quatera 700 and the Alcon with Centurion Active Fluidics. The  IOP Recovery Time was measured following a simulated occlusion break. Quatera was tested in both Flow and Vacuum Priority Modes. Vacuum limits ranged from 300 to 660 mmHg with IOP set at 30, 55, 80mmHg. Passive vacuum with an unoccluded tip was measured for flow rates from 0 to 60cc/min.

At a 30mmHg IOP set point and vacuum limits ranging from 300 to 660 mmHg, the IOP Recovery time (IOP-RT) after occlusion break ranged 419ms to 1,740ms for Centurion;284ms to 408ms for Quatera in Flow Mode; 282ms to 354ms for Quatera in Vacuum Mode. At 55mmHg, IOP-RT ranged 268ms to 1590ms for Centurion; 258ms to 471ms for Quatera in Flow Mode; 239ms to 284ms for Quatera in Vacuum Mode. At 80mmHg, IOP-RT was 243ms to 1,520ms for Centurion; 238ms to 314ms for Quatera in Flow Mode; 221ms to 279ms in Vacuum Mode. Undesired passive vacuum with an unoccluded ultrasonic tip averaged 32% higher for the Centurion.

Quatera in both Flow Priority and Vacuum Priority modes demonstrated significantly faster IOP recovery times following an occlusion break than Centurion. Quatera, with an unoccluded ultrasonic tip, demonstrated lower passive vacuum than the Centurion.
