Purpose

The purpose of the present study was to assess the refractive and visual outcomes following cataract surgery and implantation of a toric bi-aspheric diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) in eyes with corneal astigmatism.

Setting

Oftalvist, Alicante, Spain

Methods

20 patients who underwent bilateral implantation with the AsqelioTM Trifocal Toric IOL TTLIO130C were analyzed at 3 months post-surgery. Inclusion criteria considered patients with ≥50 years and bilateral cataract, and exclusion criteria considered preoperative corneal astigmatism <0.75D, previous corneal surgery or trauma, irregular cornea, amblyopia among others. Main outcome measures obtained were refractive error, photopic monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected and corrected distance intermediate visual acuity at 60 cm, uncorrected and corrected distance near visual acuity at 40 cm. Monocular and binocular defocus curves, rotational stability and adverse events were also analyzed.

Results

This single-center prospective study was approved by Hospital Clínico San Carlos Ethics Committee (Code 21/609-O_P, Madrid, Spain) and registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov. All surgeries were done using ORA intraoperative aberrometry using the same surgical technique, equipment and postoperative treatment. Standard graphs for reporting refractive and visual acuity outcomes will be constructed.

Conclusions

The present analysis at 3 months post-implantation of the AsqelioTM Trifocal Toric IOL TTLIO130C will shows the refractive and visual outcomes at different distances, rotational stability and intra and post-operative adverse events after cataract surgery in astigmatic eyes.
