Purpose
To compare two extended range of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) for monocular and binocular visual acuity in patients undergoing phacoemulsification.
Setting
Retrospective single-center case series.
Methods
Cataract patients between 50 and 80 years old who underwent phacoemulsification and EDOF IOL implantation bilaterally either with the Vivity IOL (Alcon, Geneva, Switzerland) or the LuxSmart IOL (Bausch+Lomb, Rochester, New York, USA) were recruited. Patients were followed up for three weeks postoperatively. The main outcome measures were the monocular and binocular visual acuity: uncorrected distance and near visual acuity, (UDVA and UNVA), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA).
Results
106 eyes of 53 patients were recruited. All eyes underwent successful cataract surgery. 56 eyes had Vivity IOL implanted; 50 eyes had LuxSmart IOL implanted. In the Vivity IOL group, monocular UDVA and CDVA before surgery were 0.70±0.43 and 0.23±0.21 logMAR, and they improved to 0.08±0.12 and -0.02±0.07 logMAR 3 weeks postoperatively. In the LuxSmart group, monocular UDVA and CDVA were 0.47±0.36 and 0.26±0.18 logMAR and improved to 0.12±0.13 and -0.06±0.32 logMAR 3 weeks postoperatively. There was no significant difference in monocular visual acuity. Postoperative binocular UNVA and CDVA were 0.23±0.10 and -0.02±0.08 LogMAR in the Vivity group and 0.21±0.12 and 0.02±0.06 LogMAR in the LuxSmart IOL group respectively (p=0.531 and p=0.016).
Conclusions
Both Vivity and LuxSmart EDOF IOLs provided good and comparable visual outcomes.
