The purpose of this study was to compare the intermediate visual acuity (VA) (66 cm) obtained by a monofocal Intraocular Lens (IOL) (Acrysof IQ Alcon) vs another monofocal Intraocular Lens (IOL) (enVista Bausch & Lomb) from different platforms, in postoperative cataract surgery patients at one month of follow-up.

Randomised Prospective, longitudinal, observational, comparative study. It was carried out at the Hospital de la Asociación para Evitar la Ceguera en México I.A.P (APEC) with a duration of 3 months from August to November 2022.

  • Patients were invited at the time of programming the surgical approach.
  • Patients in one group were implanted with the Acrysof IQ 1-piece IOL, and the other group with the enVista 1-piece IOL.
  • We assesed Corrected Intermediate visual acuity (66 cm) using an ETDRS chart, one month after cataract surgery and defocus curves were obtained.

A total of 76 eyes with monofocal intraocular lens implant were evaluated, of which 50% (n = 38)were Alcon AcrySof IQ IOL and the other 50% (n = 38) were Bausch & Lomb enVista IOL. Of which 64% (n = 49) were female and 36% ( n = 27) male, 50% were right eyes ( n = 38). Both groups achivied a far VA of 0.00 logMAR. A statistically significant difference (p = 0.0012) was obtained favoring correctec intermediate VA in the AcrySof IQ IOL vs. enVista IOL. A defocus curve was performed with significant results at +1.50 (p = 0.028) and +2.00 (p = 0.007) in favor of the AcrySof IQ lens.

A statistically significant difference in corrected intermediate visual acuity was obtained between patients with the AcrySof IQ intraocular lens implant versus the enVista IOL; observing that the AcrySof IQ IOL obtained a better corrected intermediate visual acuity. It is necessary to carry out more studies to be able to know in detail the impact of these results.
