Purpose

To study the safety and efficacy of No-hydro phacoemulsification in posterior polar cataracts (PPC)

Setting

A Tertiary Eye Care Hospital

Methods

A single-centre study was conducted, including eyes with PPC that had undergone the technique of No-hydro phacoemulsification between January 2020 and December 2022. Phacoemulsification was done through temporal clear corneal incision and nucleus rotation was done manually without any hydro-procedures. The functional outcomes were assessed based on postoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and intraoperative complications.

Results

The study included 162 eyes of 104 patients. The mean preoperative logMAR CDVA improved from 0.70 ± 0.20 to 0.04 ± 0.08 at three weeks follow-up (P < 0.001) and remained the same till three months. No posterior capsule rupture (PCR) was noticed at the end of phacoemulsification two of the cases. But there was no vitreous disturbance. In the two cases in which pre-existing PCR was dcumented in pre operative examination  there was neither enlargement of the defect nor vitreous disturbance. Two cases developed PCR during corneal wound hydration. However, the intraocular lens remained stable and well-centred.

Conclusions

No-hydro phacoemulsification is a safe and effective technique for managing posterior polar cataract
