Knowledge Of Patient Diagnosed With Cataract About This Condition

To evaluate patients knowledge about cataract and treatment of this condition and identification of the factors for an early diagnose and better surgery results.

The research was done in the Departament of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Center "Mother Teresa", Tirana, Albania on 137 patients who were diagnosed with cataract. The research was conducted in the period from September 2022 to October 2022. The measuring instrument of this research was an anonymus questionnaire survey created for the purpose of this research.

The research included 137 patients. The mean age of te patients was 61+-4.8 years.  5% of all patients had never heard before about cataract, the other part has heard the first time 59% from friends, 29% from siblings, 6% from their children, 5% TV, 1% from journals.  47% of the patients thought that cataract Is a age related desease, 27% thought that is related to other diseases, 2% thought that cataract Is a food and lifestyle related disease, 32% thought that cataract is treated with a surgery, 19% thought that is treated with eye drops, 26% with eyeglasses and 23% had no information.  In the first consultation 48% of patients are presented with hipermature cataract, 38% with mature cataract and 14% with cataract incipiens.

 

The research has shown that is necessary to extend the education of the patients with quality informations in primary care to stimulate the patients to do regularly ophthalmology examination for an early diagnose and better surgery outcomes.
