Purpose

In the 1980 - 1990s, radial keratotomy was a popular surgical procedure used to treat myopia. The purpose of this work was to select the proper type of IOL, calculate the right IOL power, create the conditions for the right incision place, and determine the dependence of the results, from the number of cuts on the cornea.

Setting

It was a prospective study and was done in the Eye Center Riga.

Methods

36 eyes of 18 cataract patients were included in the study. The IOL power calculation is a difficult task for the surgeon due to the cornea s irregularity and fluctuation. In our opinion, the ASCRS IOL power calculator is the best option for the challenges eyes after RK. All surgery was done using the FLACS methods. One of the main problems during the surgery was to choice of the incision site.

Results

Our study show, that FLACS is the safe and precise method for cataract surgery in the patient's eyes after RK. A total of 36 eyes from 18 patients were selected in this study. Of 18 patients, 10 were female, and 8 were male. All the patients received bilateral surgery. IOLs implanted were Alcon AcrySof Naturale IOL  ( Alcon Company USA ). All the eyes were examined one month after the surgery. At the final follow-up, 48,3 % of eyes were within 0,5D, and 51,7% were within 1,0D of the predicted spherical equvalent.

Conclusions

FLACS is the safe and precise method for cataract surgery in the patient's eyes after RK. ASCRS calculator is accurate enough to calculate IOL power in the challenges eyes after RK.The main error after the IOL calculation was the degree of the corneal change after RK.
